- Only properly trained personnel should be allowed to carry out work on ACM.
- The Shipbreaking company to acquire and use personnel protection gear including coveralls, head covering, gloves, safety shoes, face mask and goggles. For cleaning, washing and decontamination, facilities to be provided.
- Install a fence around the asbestos removal areas with a warning sign ‘Asbestos removal in progress, do not enter without permission’. During the removal of ACM, no work to be carried out in adjacent area.
- The dismantling process will begin from the accommodation area. Asbestos in this area is usually in the resilient flooring, roofing insulation and ceiling tiles. Dismantling areas will be posted with warning signs to restrict access and water sprayed at all times to minimise airborne asbestos dust. Once the dismantling process is complete, workers will promptly clean up the area by using water and filter vacuum cleaner. Asbestos from the engine room will mainly consist of packing materials and exhaust lagging. Packing materials to be removed by loosening flanges and disposing of gaskets in a sealed plastic bag.
- Use the wet method of asbestos removal. Water sprayers are to be used to keep the ACM as saturated as possible during removal. Group two workers as a team; one is responsible for breaking down of all asbestos adhesive material such as metal wire or sheet, and the other is responsible for removing the asbestos. All ACM to be immediately put into double plastic bags and disposed of to a government designated area for further treatment. After the removal work, the area must be cleaned with water and vacuumed up.
- Competent supervisors will inspect all asbestos work performed in the area during the dismantling process. They will immediately stop and correct any improper or unsafe practice.
- Once the daily procedure is finished, the asbestos worker must get washed up and put on clean clothing to prevent release of airborne asbestos. A decontamination unit, with a negative air pressure system to prevent spreading of asbestos dust outside, would be ideal.
- The dismantled asbestos is to be collected and kept moist, packed in strong plastic bags, sealed, and a warning sign marked on the package. It is then transported to the asbestos warehouse and reported to the local environmental protection agency who will arrange deep burial at a designated area.
